History

Fondazione Lelio and Lisli Basso-Issoco was founded in Rome in 1973 by Lelio Basso, with the integration of his large personal library with ISSOCO, an Institute for the study of contemporary society, which he founded in 1969. It is housed in a historical building situated between the Pantheon and the Senate, behind the church of S. Eustachio. Derelict when purchased by Basso in 1965, it was donated to the Foundation after extensive restoration.

Recognized as a non-profit organization in 1974, the Foundation has benefited from a state contribution since 1975, which also gives an indication of the kind of work it does: the fact that it is in part supported by public funds, with the controls this entails, highlights the public role of the institution and its contribution to the cultural growth of Italian political life.
